This two hour, 10 week, Saturday camp is designed to give children a well rounded experience in
dance and the fine arts.
The first hour is a pre ballet-creative movement class. Students do a pre ballet warm up, with yoga
stretches choreographed to tell a story and entertain and also encourage sequencing memory
development.
After the pre ballet warm up and yoga stretches, locomotor steps are practiced, in order of difficulty to
develop coordination and confidence. These steps first practiced alone, then combined with other
simple steps to begin the process of learning to connect steps. This is the beginning of learning
choreography.
After the structured movement, students move to the creative movement.
Creative movement is very important to young children. The lessons of the program lead children
through the vocabulary of choreography. The intuitive awareness being allowed to come out, where
there is no "right or wrong" in movement solutions. Children crave this part of class called
"imagination dance". The children are unselfconscious if approached at an early age.
The students then move over to the music and art program. Students drink water and listen to a part of
the story of Peter and the Wolf. They then listen to that part of the Peter and the Wolf music to
imagine that section of the story, and are invited to dance to the music.
The children then color a picture of Peter and the Wolf or a scene from Peter and the Wolf. A long
term art project is begun which requires stages. This helps children learn patience over time, and stage
of work.
The music is played again while the students work on their projects. The teacher narrates the music to
remind the students of the story while the instrument's illustrative voices are actually playing.
Students finish their last class with Parents Day. Parts are invited to participate in the arts and crafts
class to help the children. This is very fun for the family.
On the last day the students take home their long term art project, a love of the fine arts, and new
friends who share their interests.
